SAVED SUMMER FOR OUR YOUTHS
The NYC Council has secured $115.8 million to bring back
the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and the COMPASS,
Beacon, and Cornerstone SUMMER CAMP programs. Thanks to
this restoration more than 35,000 youth will participate
in a job training programs and at least 70,000 children
will enjoy a summer camp experience. A special thank you
to our
City Council members Farah Louis 45
Council District and Black and Latino Co Chair Daneek
Miller for spearheading restoration of Sesame Flyers
Discretionary funding once again with the strong support
of its members who’s districts fall within our service
areas, Mathiew Eugene, 40th Council District and Alicka
Samuel District 41 , Robert Cornegy District 36, Lori
Cumbo District 35.
Sesame Flyers is pleased to report that the NYC Adopted
Budget includes summer funding for 300 Beacon, and
COMPASS 120 SUMMER CAMP slots where hybrid in-person and
remote activities in July/August, maximizing outdoor
activities and the number of people who can benefit from
the service in scheduled shifts to support social
distancing.
We are funded for summer activities for full enrollment
with a partial budget - with the idea that activities
are planned for up to 50% in-person participation at any
given time. Participants will experience a partial
schedule of activities, for example in shifts of 2 weeks
on/2 weeks off; 1/2 day on/1/2 day off. We are currently
developing how to balance service schedules and maintain
service levels to the highest degree possible in the
best interest of community needs.
It is our goal that 100% of participants experience some
in-person services, in line with DOHMH and NYS
standards.
-
COMPASS SONYC Programs* will operate hybrid
services, including in-person services for 108 in-person hours;
minimum of 4 weeks, with the goal to serve 100% contracted
seats, each for part of the service hours. (For example, 1/2 the
youth are in session I for 2 weeks; 1/2 the youth are in session
II for 2 weeks)
-
Beacon Community Centers* will operate hybrid
services, including in-person services for 5 weeks, 8am to 6pm
M-F, no evening or weekend in-person services, with the goal to
reach a minimum of 100 youth and 50 community participants of
mixed ages. For our school-based programs, only a certain
number of schools will be available for in-person services, and DYCD will inform us which location can accommodate our program.
In-person school based services can be planned for 7/13/20 to
8/14/20.
(If our 5 week service schedule begins prior to being confirmed
a school site, we will operate a fully-remote service and
incorporate family in-person outdoor events to every extent
possible up and until a school facility is confirmed for our
program.)
