Gen Z’s Voices Teen Poetry Slam!

On Saturday April 16th Gen Z’s Voices, Sesame Flyers Teen Magazine hosted their first ever Teen Poetry Slam fundraiser and it was a great success. This was the first event we hosted for the general public in the Clubhouse post COVID mandates. It was great to welcome the community back into Sesame. The teens shared poems about race, social justice, love and life. Participants came from all parts of NYC, Long Island and NJ. There is a real need to provide safe spaces to direct our youths’ attention and energy in structured outlets. We hope to welcome them back again as many of the poets asked about future events.

Executive Director's Message

I am so proud to see Sesame arrive at our 39th year of service. Witnessing the fulfillment of a vision created in 1983 fills all of our hearts with joy. We embrace the way forward to our grand 40th anniversary next year and we walk proudly into our destiny. Sesame Flyers will continue to provide employment opportunities to thousands in the community, award scholarships to college-bound students, and continue to uplift the Caribbean Community.

Celebrating 39 Years Of Serving The Community

Sesame Flyers International Inc. is celebrating our 39th year of supporting children, servicing the community, and celebrating the surrounding diaspora. Established by the late Joseph Charles amongst other founding members, Sesame Flyers International has been a staple in the Caribbean Community for nearly 4 decades, providing free services and cultural programs that have impacted well over 39,000 residents in Brooklyn.

Led by Chairman Mr. Raymond Luke, and Executive Director Mr. Curtis Nelson, Sesame Flyers has accomplished much within its three-decade lifespan including providing employment opportunities to thousands in the community, supplying thousands of scholarship dollars to over 40 college-bound students, and accumulating accolades including the West Indian American Day Carnival Association’s most successful Carnival Band with thirteen first place titles in the West Indian American Labor Day Parade.

Sesame Flyers celebrates being a leading force in Brooklyn, most especially as stability was maintained throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Serving as the only Mas Camp to have consecutive community Carnival experiences published in The New York Times, two separate national television recordings on PBS, and a swift and superb transition to remote and virtual afterschool programming, Sesame illustrates its adaptability and resilience time and time again.

This year we will continue to uplift the community with our annual Holiday Toy Giveaway, NOW Generation of Pan event, Youth Sports Day and the Caribbean Essence Awards and Showcase. To celebrate the longevity of the Sesame Flyers and to help continue our work, please consider making a donation of $39 in honor of our 39 years of service. Parent Spotlight Ms. Kate Bonaparte of the Winthrop Beacon

I am a parent volunteer, and as I like to say, the “mascot” of the Winthrop Beacon. I cheer everybody on to do what they have to do. My sons Marcus and Andrew, ages 5 and 8 respectively attend the program. What made me decide to become a parent volunteer was that I met Ms. Simone, the Winthrop Beacon Director and I wanted to support by spending time helping out with the kids of the program. I love the activities that the Beacon offers and I am also interested in starting a crochet arts and crafts program for the children. I love Ms. Simone, she is the best, you can come to her for anything and get results. If she doesn’t know, she will find out for you, she is willing to help and aid you no matter what it is. If anyone is thinking about becoming a parent volunteer, I say don’t think about yourself, think about the kids and how you want to help. Given these challenging times we are in, my motto for children these days is “breathe.” Some kids have anxiety and problems with stress and I want youth to know they can relax and take one day at time. And for parents, the same message applies, the pandemic has been a lot for all of us. Finding balance is a daily struggle. While I do not feel safe to bring my children everywhere, I do feel safe to bring them to the Beacon. I feel good about it because Ms. Simone and the staff do the best they can for our kids.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

“National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the importance of families and communities working together to strengthen families to prevent child abuse and neglect. Through this collaboration, prevention services and supports help protect children and produce thriving families. “– Child Welfare.org

Sesame In The Community

On March 26th Sesame Flyers Partnered with Brooklyn Community Partnerships for an in-person event promoting positive changes in women's development mentally, socially, and spiritually by connecting them with quality and empowering social services within the community.

Attending women participated in workshops that discussed nutrition, sexual health, financial literacy, and COVID-19 vaccines. The well packed day included a powerful all-female panel and concluded with a mental health workshop tying it all together. Service providers and business owners tabled at the event providing information about resources and services.

The event was a success, and several supporting partners helped ensure that the event did not lack anything from childcare to raffled gifts, refreshments and much more.
