EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
MR. CURTIS NELSON

Spring has indeed sprung, marking the start of what is traditionally the busiest time of year for us at Sesame. With the season changing, we are gearing up for a series of major events that not only highlight the cultural richness of our community, but also bring us closer together. Among these anticipated events are Summer Camp, the always enjoyable Family Sports Day, the Caribbean Essence Showcase and Awards, and of course our signature Labor Day weekend participation. These occasions are a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate our heritage, achievements, and the strong bonds within our community.

This spring we have celebrated and promoted Black excellence. Our efforts to provide a platform for talent, creativity, and leadership bring me joy, a month that holds a special place in our hearts. This month, we celebrate 41 years of dedicated service to our community, a milestone that fills us with both happiness and a deep sense of gratitude.

As we continue to navigate through 2024, our commitment to serving and uplifting our community remains as strong as ever. We are immensely proud of what we have achieved together and excited for what the future holds. Here's to another year of growth, celebration, and service, made possible by the support and dedication of our community. Together, we will continue to make a significant impact and ensure that our collective light shines brightly for all to see.

SESAME FLYERS INTERNATIONAL IN THE COMMUNITY

We were delighted to support Councilwoman Farah Louis's Spring Kickoff, a vibrant family day that brought our community together in celebration and joy. Sesame Flyers contributed to the day's success by providing Kiddies Carnival costumes, setting the stage for an impromptu fashion show that became a highlight of the festivities.

The fashion show turned into a memorable occasion, with kids and families embracing the opportunity to showcase their style and spirit. Laughter and applause filled the air as participants strutted with confidence, as they ripped the runway.

Family-centered activities are at the heart of Sesame. We're grateful for the chance to contribute to such a wonderful day and look forward to more opportunities to support and celebrate with our community.

BLACK EXCELLENCE SHOWCASE AT WINTHROP BEACON

We recently celebrated an outstanding Black Excellence show at our Winthrop Beacon program, where the spotlight was firmly on our youth. Their dedication and hard work culminated in a performance that not only entertained but truly shone with talent and passion. Events like these are crucial in nurturing self-esteem and confidence among our young participants, showcasing their abilities and achievements in a supportive environment.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the staff and leadership of the program. Their commitment and tireless efforts played a pivotal role in creating the space for our children to excel and present their best selves. It's through such dedicated teamwork that our events transcend expectations, leaving a lasting impact on both participants and the community.

CELEBRATING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH AT BILDERSEE BEACON

During Women's History Month, our Build-a-Sea Beacon program shone a spotlight on the incredible achievements of women through a captivating performance by our talented young participants. Celebrating this important month, the children showcased a variety of talents, from singing and dancing to spoken word, all in honor of the progress women have made throughout history. The support from families was overwhelming, with many coming out to cheer on the performers and acknowledge the dedication of our staff. At Sesame Flyers, we take pride in recognizing the vital role women play within our organization and beyond. This event was a beautiful reminder of the strength and potential of our young girls, who stand to become the influential women of tomorrow. It's a privilege to contribute to their journey and celebrate the significant strides women have made, inspiring us all to strive for equality and recognition in every sphere of life.

'BLACK IS OUR STORY' AT THE SFI CULTURAL CENTER

At the Sesame Flyers Cultural Center, we recently hosted a deeply enriching Black History event that cast a spotlight on Caribbean heritage, aptly themed "Our Legacy, In the Beginning." This celebration brought to life the rich tradition of oral storytelling, a fundamental aspect of how we honor and learn our history. The evening was a showcase of cultural expressions, including calypso, poems, monologues, and soca, each performance weaving together stories of our ancestry and resilience. Notable participants like 3Nee Shuga, Dr. Witty, Olabisi, and CoCo Sambo graced the event, captivating the audience with their talent. The program also featured spoken word performances and highlighted the work of local painting artist Anita Jack, creating a comprehensive portrayal of our collective legacy and the threads of history that continue to shape our identity today.

FLOYD BENNETT FIELD!  PUBLIC ARTS FESTIVAL

Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy presents the Floyd Bennett Field! Public Arts Festival on October 20-22, 2023. The Festival will feature 2 evenings of site-specific digital art works projection mapped onto the monumental 11,000-square-foot façade of historic Hangars 3 & 4. Additional events throughout the weekend include a silent dance party, behind-the-scenes tours, food trucks, music, and more! All events are free.

This family-friendly weekend-long event is a celebration of the park’s rich history and vibrant future as a destination for millions of New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy a National Park experience in the urban environment. The Festival coincides with the conclusion of Gateway’s 50th anniversary year and the anticipated rehabilitation and reactivation of these significant structures.
