Last year Sesame Flyers joined then New York City Council Member
Jumaane Williams, elected officials, and advocacy groups to support
the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). This call to action on
the steps of City Hall was organized for increased investment to
allow for the expansion of the program that provided over 70,000
jobs for youth 14-24 last summer. |

March is also Women ‘s
History Month and a particularly special month for Sesame Flyers.
From the end of February to the beginning of March, many of the
founding members of Sesame Flyers International head down to
Trinidad’s “ Carnival Conference”. This is the island where Sesame
Flyers began 35 years ago and a place I am proud to call home. |

“Every day, the nation's 680,000 social workers work to empower and elevate millions of people, including some of the most vulnerable in our society.
National Professional Social Work Month in March 2019 is an
opportunity for social workers around the nation and the world as
well as their supporters to educate the public about the invaluable
contributions of the profession. “. NASW |

The field of Social Work reminds us to take time for our physical and emotional health. In light of this we highlight a special Self Care event held this month for the community. In partnership with our neighbor Caribbean Women’s Health Association, Sesame Flyers hosted a Self Care session for Mothers. Everyone in attendance was treated to a free yoga session, a nutritious meal, art making, a professional photography session and a rich conversation about childbirth. All the women left refreshed and rejuvenated along with a gift bag and yoga mat to support them in continuing their yoga practice. The women shared their successes and challenges as women and mothers.
These times of pause to reflect and be mindful go a long way in
developing and maintaining a healthy relationship with ourselves. We
encourage everyone in our community to make a conscious effort to
make time for yourself daily. |
