Major News! Summer Youth Employment Update

Last year Sesame Flyers joined then New York City Council Member Jumaane Williams, elected officials, and advocacy groups to support the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). This call to action on the steps of City Hall was organized for increased investment to allow for the expansion of the program that provided over 70,000 jobs for youth 14-24 last summer.

We are overjoyed to announce that Sesame Flyers has been awarded new contracts to provide 550 project based and work based experiences to young people this summer! Stay tuned for further updates on how to get your young people involved with the SYEP program.

Executive Director's Message

Jobs Jobs Jobs!!!! Sesame Flyers was awarded 500 jobs for our youth this summer. As part of the Mayors’ Summer Youth Employment Initiative, Sesame Flyers will be hiring youth to work in public intuitions, not for profits and private industries in and around the city. This represents a major victory and accomplishment for our agency, our youth and the economic growth or our community. Stay tuned.

March is also Women ‘s History Month and a particularly special month for Sesame Flyers. From the end of February to the beginning of March, many of the founding members of Sesame Flyers International head down to Trinidad’s “ Carnival Conference”. This is the island where Sesame Flyers began 35 years ago and a place I am proud to call home.

This time of year, Trinidad welcomes people from all over the world to celebrate culture and togetherness for Carnival. I have the greatest privilege this year to also celebrate my birthday in the land of my birth, as the island transforms into what we consider the Greatest Show on Earth, it also sets the stage for Sesame Flyers to spring into .

In this month’s edition of the Newsletter you will find information about programs in preparation for the summer season, which includes over 500 free summer camp slots, launching of our Summer Youth Employment program, and activities leading up to the West Indian American Day Parade. We also highlight the need for self-care. We hope you make the time this spring for your own personal renewal and rejuvenation.

Celebrating Women's History Month

The Sesame Flyers International Center For Family Support program salutes ALL the influential, brave and fearless women who continue to contribute to our lives, community and world. May you continue to shine and make a difference!!!!!

Second Annual Community Baby Shower

In line with Women’s History month, Sesame Flyers welcomed back Supermamma Birth Services to host their 2nd Annual Community Baby Shower. Expecting moms as well as mothers of newborns filled the SFI Cultural Center on Sunday March 17th. This event gave assistance to mothers in need of support, education and simply to be celebrated and loved.

There were plenty of gifts, games, food, entertainment and empowerment for all who attended. Topics covered for the day ranged from money matters, breast-feeding tips, oral care and its connection to pregnancy and overall health, as well as useful information for labor and delivery. We look forward to welcoming Supermamma Birth Services next year!

Celebrating Social Work

“Every day, the nation's 680,000 social workers work to empower and elevate millions of people, including some of the most vulnerable in our society.

National Professional Social Work Month in March 2019 is an opportunity for social workers around the nation and the world as well as their supporters to educate the public about the invaluable contributions of the profession. “. NASW

Making Time For Self Care

The field of Social Work reminds us to take time for our physical and emotional health. In light of this we highlight a special Self Care event held this month for the community. In partnership with our neighbor Caribbean Women’s Health Association, Sesame Flyers hosted a Self Care session for Mothers. Everyone in attendance was treated to a free yoga session, a nutritious meal, art making, a professional photography session and a rich conversation about childbirth. All the women left refreshed and rejuvenated along with a gift bag and yoga mat to support them in continuing their yoga practice. The women shared their successes and challenges as women and mothers.

These times of pause to reflect and be mindful go a long way in developing and maintaining a healthy relationship with ourselves. We encourage everyone in our community to make a conscious effort to make time for yourself daily.
