EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
On behalf of Sesame
Flyers, I would like to extend a warm
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in our community. We also want
to say Happy Mother’s Day to every woman, who is like a mother of
which we have many in the Sesame Flyers Family. Thank you for all
the hard work you do day in and day out to serve our young people
and raise them to be strong, confident, and successful citizens.
Additionally, we acknowledge all the mothers who are no longer with
us whose loving contributions stay close to our hearts.
This edition of the
Newsletter we were recognized for our 36 commitment to our community
as featured in
Caribbean Life, on
WBLS Dahved
Levy’s Caribbean Fever segment
(click to listen)
and on
UrbanBuzz Magazine .
We are also dedicating this edition to those women who nurture and
hold up in the journey of life. The theme of nurturing can be seen
from the success we have with our kids in our preventive foster care
program, to young adults learning about Caribbean designs all the
way to highlighting a young adult employee in our programs. I
believe you will be touched and moved by the inspiring work that is
happening here at Sesame Flyers.

“A testimony to the work we do” Employee spotlight by one of 211’s
own Dauvante Robinson
This
month’s newsletter submission is a very different type of employee
spotlight. As the employee isn’t directly one of ours but is
certainly a part of the Sesame Flyers Family and lends proof to how
important it is to continue to do what we do in and for the
community. On a random Wednesday afternoon 211 received a visit from
our Executive Director , Deputy Executive Director and our Director
of Program Operations and upon entering the building had to sign in
at the security desk with school safety. Luck would have it he
remembered our Deputy ED Ms. Judith Faison and immediately reminded
her that his first job ever was with her through the Summer Youth
Employment program. In his own words he says the following...
My name is Davaunte Robinson. I graduated from Arts and Media
preparatory Academy and now attend Medgar Evers College majoring in
psychology, minoring in social work. I’ve been a school safety agent
of the police department for almost a year, but back in 2013 I was
doing summer youth at Sesame Flyers at the Winthrop Campus! Being a
part of Sesame Flyers was a great experience. It gave me the
opportunity to get in tune with other Caribbean cultures, it also
made me network and meet friends that I’m still close with to this
day. I’m glad that I had the chance to be apart of something so
special and I highly recommend it to any kid in the city that needs
to get away from everyday troubles or just needs a positive place to
go to, a safe haven! Even now that I am older and at my current site
as an agent, it’s great to see kids come in excited about Sesame.
Enthusiastic to be apart of something positive that they actually
like because I was once that kid. I appreciate the great staff of
Sesame Flyers here at 211. Ms. Wilson and Shanelle and Kevin along
with the other staff but especially Ms. Judy, for not only helping
me out when I needed it, but continuing to do the same years after
me.

Operations. This is was great opportunity to share the pride of our
Caribbean Heritage and expose young people to something new.!

A SUCCESS STORY - C.M. CASE
NAMES ARE IN INITIALS AND WITH HELD FOR PRIVACY
Dictated by Luzett Logan/Case Planner and written by Shanice
Campbell, Office Manager
The C.M. case was referred to Sesame Flyers International, Inc.,
Center for Family Support program, due to excessive corporal
punishment.
A foster parent to the subject child met his current mate, they had
a child, and they started living together as a family unit with both
children. It was hard for the paramour to adjust and create a
relationship with the subject child. Furthermore, the paramour was
jealous of the relationship that the subject child shared with her
foster parent. Consequently, the paramour began to take out her
frustrations on the child through the use of excessive corporal
punishment. An SCR (State Central Registry) case was called in. The
child had sustained a scar to her face. Both parents were
recommended to take anger management and parenting classes. They
initially refused and mentioned that they didn’t see the need for
the class. However, after 2 and a half months, the case planner was
finally able to get the parents to take the recommended classes.
The case planner observed that the foster parent and paramour’s
behavior toward the child has since changed. Both children have
decreased their sibling rivalry. In addition, the child’s behavior
and performance has improved in school. The case is successful
because the parents became receptive to the referred services,
practiced what they were being taught by adjusting their behavior
positively in the home and continue to make great strides with
service plan completion. The case is on target with being
successfully closed within a few months.
