SESAME FLYERS INTERNATIONAL IN THE COMMUNITY

At Sesame Flyers, we are committed to staying connected to the community that supports us and, most importantly, to strengthening these vital relationships. Thanks to these connections, we were able to be a part of several successful Back to School events, helping prepare our youth for the school year ahead. Our future rests in the hands of our youth, and it is our mission to equip them with the tools and support they need to succeed.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
MR. CURTIS NELSON

As we embrace the beautiful uncertainty of the changing seasons—where summer seems to linger just a bit longer, and autumn is beginning to show its colors—I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve had so far.

This year, we’ve witnessed a new wave of Carnival, and the much-anticipated return of our After School programs, which have been thriving and very beneficial to our community. As we look ahead, I am elated to share a recap of our completed events and share the ones that we lined up for the remainder of the year.

Thank you for being an integral part of our community. Your support empowers us to soar to new heights. Together, we will continue to make a difference, one step at a time, for the future of our children and the strength of our community.

LABOR DAY 2024 REFLECTIONS - The Genesis of Carnival Renaissance

The West Indian American Day Carnival 2024 was just a sneak peek into the vision we have in store for our 3 year theme of Carnival Renaissance. Sesame Carnival lit up Eastern Parkway with each costume unfolding a piece of Carnival history. On behalf of Sesame Carnival we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported and continues to support us in keeping our Caribbean heritage alive. With this new era, we look forward to seeing our Sesame Carnival family grow in the years to come.

AFTER SCHOOL IS BACK IN ACTION

Now fully settled into the new school year, our free after-school programs are back in full swing and thriving. The wide range of activities we offer are helping kids of all ages to grow and develop new skills and abilities. From our role in academic support to creative arts and hands-on projects, our programs are geared towards both learning and creativity. We’re excited to continue building a successful school year ahead.

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK & BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The month of October is all about Breast Cancer Awareness! It is a special time dedicated to educating the public, supporting those affected, and most importantly advocating for advancements in research and care. Sesame Flyers took to the streets of Brooklyn with a pink purpose, we honored survivors, remembered loved ones lost, and spread awareness—one stride at a time.

THE PEOPLE'S MONEY

The NYC Civic Engagement Commission (CEC) is excited to launch the third year of The People’s Money 2024/25 participatory budgeting process! All New Yorkers age 11 and up, regardless of immigration or incarceration status will be able to decide how to spend part of the city’s budget. Last year, the CEC ran this process for the second time in NYC history, inviting thousands of residents to submit ideas and ultimately vote on programs for their communities. See the funded programs from last year!

KINGS PLAZA AND BROOKLYN FASHION WEEK

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR THE 2025 GRACE KENNEDY BIRTHRIGHT PROGRAM

GraceKennedy (GK) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2025 Jamaican Birthright Programme, with the deadline for submissions set for November 30, 2024.

The 2025 programme will welcome four university students of Jamaican descent from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States for a five-week professional and cultural internship in Jamaica. The internship, scheduled from June 28 to August 7, 2025, offers participants a unique chance to work with a GraceKennedy subsidiary aligned with their career goals while deepening their connection to Jamaican culture through immersive Heritage Pathway tours.

Caroline Mahfood, CEO of the GK Foundation, which coordinates the programme on the Company’s behalf, expressed the importance of fostering relationships with the next generation of the Jamaican diaspora, saying, "Connecting with the next generation is very important to GraceKennedy. Many second and third-generation Jamaicans are familiar with our delicious food and world-renowned music but have never had the opportunity to experience our culture in a way that allows them to make deep, long-lasting connections with Jamaica. That’s the aim of the Birthright Programme."

Eligible applicants for the 2025 GK Birthright Programme must be second or third-generation Jamaicans (with Jamaican parents or grandparents), aged 18-25 years, and enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme with a Grade ‘B’ average or higher. They should also demonstrate a strong passion for learning about their Jamaican heritage and a genuine interest in contributing to diaspora activities.

For more information and application details, visit www.bit.ly/GKBirthright or email gkfoundation@gkco.com with any inquiries.
