Executive
Director's Message
MR. CURTIS NELSON
The
start of the Autumn season is an exciting time with unlimited
opportunities. It serves as a unique time to reflect on the beauty of
the summer, prime yourself for the holidays, and prepare for a new year.
As I reflect on Sesame Flyers’ impact over the summer, I am left with
joy and anticipation for 2023. I am proud to share that we continued our
summer youth employment program securing 600 jobs for our youth. We
returned to Eastern Parkway to celebrate our culture and supported 15
Mas Bands to do the same as well as bringing the children out for
Kiddies. We ensured the return of our signature Calypso tent which is
the last remaining in Brooklyn. Gathering the steel pan community for
Pan Jazz under the stars at the iconic rooftop of the Brooklyn Museum
will be a night that remains unforgettable. Please follow this link to
enjoy the night in its entirety,
Pan Jazz Under the Stars
The future is bright, and our commitment to serving the community has
never been stronger. Spotlighting our culture will be of particular
focus for the agency as we go into our 40th year of service. To see the
grand vision of our founders 40 years later being successfully executed
by our board, membership, staff, and volunteers lets me know we have
found our way, one that will ensure our future for many years to come.
Sesame Flyers is fully stepping into our destiny of being a leader of
the Caribbean Community at large.

Domestic
Violence – YOU ARE NOT ALONE
BY MRS. RAHAMAN, DIRECTOR OF SESAME FLYERS INTERNATIONAL CENTER OF
FAMILY SUPPORT
Domestic Violence (DV) continues to affect individuals across all
socioeconomic status. A majority of our ACS referred cases consistently
list domestic violence as the reason for referral. There has been a
consistent increase in the number of cases since the start of the
pandemic.
Our program recently assisted a mother and child to safely relocate to a
DV shelter. The mother presented some typical traits of a battered
woman: financial dependence, fear of the perpetrator and many attempts
to leave the home/situation. The perpetrator continually accessed the
home even with an active order of protection. The latter posed a threat
to the safety and risk for the entire household.
Our Case Planners work diligently to support DV survivors by
implementing a DV safety Plan, DV services for the survivor parent and
child(ren) and, at times, batterer intervention services for the
perpetrator. Ms. Harte, Senior Case Planner, provided monthly DV case
management counseling, while collaborating with ACS and the academic
provider (who had previous knowledge of the DV). After several
additional sessions of case management counseling, supportive sessions
to mother, she developed sufficient strength and self-reliance to
relocate. The family is now safely residing in a DV shelter without the
perpetrator’s involvement. They will continue to receive supportive
counseling and eventually permanent housing.
Thank you to Ms. Harte for a job well done and to our community partners
who collaborate with Sesame Flyers to ensure the safety of our children
and families.

Winthrop Beacon Homecoming
On Thursday, October 6th the Winthrop Beacon hosted a “Homecoming” event
for the children of the program. With music and food, the participants
of the program got a fun opportunity to engage with the staff and learn
more about each other. This was the first event hosted by SFI Winthrop
Beacon after an amazing fully in-person Summer Camp. The SFI Winthrop
Beacon staff are excited to have more events to close out the year and
welcome 2023.

Sesame Flyers International Support Breast Cancer Awareness
Sesame Flyers has been a longtime supporter of the American Cancer
Society. We are proud to partner with them to encourage those who are
battling this disease and to be an ally for thrivers and survivors. On
Sunday, October 9th Sesame Flyers Dance company joined the Brooklyn walk
in Coney Island as a cheer station and performed a cultural dance for
the crowd. We look forward to our continued partnership next year!
