Executive Director's Message
It’s
Summer Time! At Sesame that means Summer Camp and the Summer Youth
Employment Program is just about to launch and we get to celebrate
Caribbean American Heritage all month long. In this edition of the
Newsletter, learn about the availability and registration process for
Summer Camp. There is still time to apply and make a difference in the
lives of young people by referring or becoming a worksite for SYEP.
Worksites fuel this program and allow SYEP to thrive.
We are greatly looking forward to participating in the celebration of
Caribbean American Heritage Month as we join with other immigrant
communities in the World Refugee Day festivities in Park Slope on June
20th and present scholarships to extraordinary young people and honor
community leaders at the Sesame Flyers International Caribbean Essence
Awards and Showcase. This night is where we can collectively enjoy our
rich culture and heritage while celebrating our emerging youth leaders.
Please consider this as my personal invitation for you to join the
celebration. We have so much for which to be grateful. I hope to see you
there.
Now that things are opening back up, we are happy to be partnering, in
person, with other community based organizations that serve our
community. I am so proud of how we as community fared for the last year
in a mostly virtual environment. We look forward to the future with a
spirit of great hope and optimism. I would also like to take this time
to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the men who join me and have the
courage to work in our communities to keep them safe. The work we do is
invaluable, we see you and thank you for your time and commitment.

Summer Camp
At Sesame 2021

We are happy
to announce that we are accepting Middle School applications for the
in-person Summer Rising program. Summer Rising is New York City's free
summer plan for children in grades K-12.

Students in grades K–8 will get outside, learn, and engage with peers

activities.
Summer Rising will address academic and social emotional needs of our
youth through tailored support. These programs will provide a bridge to
next school year and allow students to reconnect with one another and
with their schools. Students will address unfinished learning while
providing avenues for recreation, exploration, and fun in the afternoon,
with us at the end of the morning session’s learning.

Heroes At
Winthrop Beacon

The Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) recently
launched “The Heroes Project” a literacy-focused comic book initiative
that challenges youth across NYC to develop stories about heroes - real
or imagined - in their own communities. We were fortunate to be selected
to offer this program at our Winthrop Beacon. This 3-month program
geared towards 3rd and 4th Graders operated virtually and met once a
week under the instruction of our Artistic Expression Instructor, Ms.
Shyann. The participants truly enjoyed this program and now Simone
Warner, Winthrop Beacon’s Program Director is working to incorporate a
Heroes Project themed activity into the school year plan.
