EARTH DAY CELEBRATION AT THE WINTHROP BEACON
By Simone Warner Winthrop Beacon Director
Under the
direction of Ms. Shyann, our Art Teacher, the participants of the
Winthrop Beacon painted their interpretation of what the Earth looks
like on paper plates and created a tree with leaves made from tissue
paper and recycled cardboard.
Ms. Dayna incorporated Earth Day fun with Jeopardy and Kahoot. The
questions ranged from “What day is International Mother Earth Day
celebrated?” to “What year was International Mother Earth Day adopted?
Who knew that “Earth Day” was really called International Mother Earth
Day or that the new name was adopted in 2009?! Earth Day was first held
on April 22, 1970.
In STEAM, participants discussed reasons to save the Earth and learned
about recyclable materials. They also viewed a video which gave ideas of
how children can help the community go green. Ms. Dineisha also had them
write down their feelings about the Earth.
It was definitely a great experience for everyone!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
I
want to wish Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers of Sesame Flyers.
Thank you for your dedication and commitment to our children. We are
fortunate to have women who care about the young people of our community
as their own. This is also a great time to also acknowledge the gifts
that Mother Earth has given us. In this edition of the Newsletter enjoy
artwork done by our young people at the Winthrop Beacon in honor of
Earth Day a few weeks ago.
May is
Mental Health Awareness Month, Sesame’s role in the disparities in our
communities around health and well-being has become of more interest to
us here. I have personally made a commitment to put more focus on
community health. We are proud to share a feature story from a young
person regarding youth mental health. Please take moment to review the
resources we are developing right here at Sesame as well as community
resources that can support you or someone you know.
One of the
best things we can do for young people is help direct their energy and
focus. A great way to accomplish this is through meaningful employment.
We will be placing 600 youth in jobs this summer, however we need your
help. We are looking for businesses who want to support the Summer Youth
Employment Program by inviting young people to work with them virtually
or in person at no cost. Consider becoming or referring a worksite and
make the difference in the life of a young person.
As the
temperatures continue to rise and we slowly return to being around
people more, I encourage you to continue to be safe and proactive for
you and your loved ones. Please take a look at our COVID Vaccine and
Testing information. Please share this information, we want to ensure we
all stay safe.

THE FUTURE OF OUR FUTURE!
By Madison Garret – Youth Leader, 16 Years old

As the great Fredrick Douglass wrote, “It is easier to build strong
children than repair broken men”. Uplift the children around you and
instill positive affirmations in their forming minds. Love the Black
children around you. Not only pay attention to their actions but listen
and speak to the Black adolescents who surround you. Take notice of
their actions and speaking tones, of their sleeping patterns and weight
fluctuations. It is essential to properly care, comfort, and protect the
Black children of America.
In late 2019, The New York Beacon published an article about the rising
suicide rate amongst Black youths. For Black children aged between 10
and 14, suicide is the second leading cause of death and for Black
teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19, the third leading cause of
death (National Institute of Mental Health). Although this study was
reported by The New York Beacon and several other reputable news sites,
national attention was not largely drawn nor was there a spotlight
shined on this matter long enough. Amidst the under-reporting of the
increased suicide rate, negligence for the well-being and mental health
of Black adolescents continues. Non-Hispanic black children are more
likely to have mental health diagnoses compared with non-Hispanic white
children (Healio Pediatrics). Illnesses of depression and anxiety ravage
the minds of today’s Black youth, resulting in suicide attempts.
Because this issue remains under-reported, the suicide rate among Black
children continues to soar. What does this mean for the next generation
of Black children? Are Black children supposed to grow up learning to
cope with their depression and anxiety untreated and neglected? To
combat this issue, the stigma surrounding mental health must absolutely
be eradicated and reform needs to take place. In our judicial system.
Black and African American people with mental health conditions are more
likely to be imprisoned instead of receive mental treatment compared to
other races. The Black community’s judgment about mental health and the
fear of being dismissed as “crazy” prevents suffering Blacks from
seeking treatment for their mental illnesses. When improvement in the
judicial system and honest discussions about mental health begins, Black
and African-Americans will truly heal mentally. |

BECOME WORKSITE FOR THE SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is the nation’s largest youth
employment program, connecting NYC youth between the ages of 14 and 24
with career exploration opportunities and paid work experience each
summer at no cost to employers. Participants have the opportunity to
explore their interests and career pathways, develop workplace skills
and engage in learning experiences that help in developing their social,
civic and leadership skills. By participating in structured project and
work-based opportunities, NYC youth are better prepared for careers of
the future. Sesame Flyers will host an open house to learn more about
